Michael is a language and communication consultant with special interests in business and technical communication. He has carried out consulting and training assignments in Japan, the United States, the UK, Austria, and Sweden, as well as in Australia and New Zealand.

Michael has an Honours degree in English Language and Linguistics from the University of New South Wales. He teaches in Linguistics and Student Writing Skills programs at Macquarie University, where he is now pursuing post-graduate research in linguistics. He has taught in Professional Writing programs at the University of Western Sydney (Nepean). He has also been accredited for teaching English and Business Communication in the NSW TAFE sector. He has presented a number of conference papers in a variety of national and international forums, and has been a guest lecturer in Mechanical Engineering postgraduate programs at the University of Technology, Sydney. His research interests include discourse and genre analysis, theories of context, translation theory, visual rhetoric, and typography.

Before launching his independent career as a linguistic consultant, Michael worked in the computer industry for twenty-five years, including eleven years at each of IBM and Fujitsu. In that time, he held a variety of technical, support, and management positions, including more than three years managing the design, development, and delivery of education and training programmes for Fujitsu’s professional and managerial staff.

Michael was a Director of the Australian Institute of Professional Communicators 1996-1999, and was a member of the Panel of Judges for the 1999 Serif Awards. He was President of the Australian Society for Technical Communication (NSW) 1999-2001, and Vice-President of the Society of Editors (NSW) 2000-2002.
